A Precious Thing
We have a rare and precious thing, you and I
A strong physical attraction
An alignment of values
A meeting of minds
An uncanny connection that transcends the obvious
Exactly when, where or how this happened, is a mystery to me
Maybe it was in a dream
Or maybe, this is a dream
And I’ll wake up and find you gone.

Thoughts about connecting on every level with someone special
Life in Colour
The world became a different place the day that I met you,
The sun shines much more warmly, the sky’s a brighter blue.
The shades of grey I saw before, have somehow been replaced
My life is glorious technicolour, the darkness now erased.
My thoughts are soaring higher, there’s nothing I can’t do
My senses working overtime and all because of you
And yet I feel afflicted, and have a heavy heart,
My world reverts to shades of grey, whenever we’re apart

Life can seem very different when you fall in love.
The Bird
I was walking one day when a bird flew past me
It perched close by in a high tree
I watched it and it watched me.
There enbranched it quietly stood
In the safety of that small wood.
In the calmness of that old oak,
With hissing flies and bullfrog croak
Hazy sun shadows just like smoke
On wavering bough it did cling
For me a solo it began to sing.

This was one of the first poems I wrote when I was still at school
Questions, questions
Do you love me?
Do you want me?
What are your doubts and fears?
Does commitment frighten you?
Or can you plan for years?
Do you need me?
Do you care?
When will you decide?
Will you always run away
To find a place to hide?
Do I love you?
Do I want you?
Will I always care?
Just open your eyes and trust in me
I promise I’ll be there

This is a reflection of the insecurities, vulnerabilities and pressures that can exist in relationships.
Before
Somewhere we connected
Subconsciously in part,
Enjoying time together
More than the time apart.
I’m not sure how it happened
All I really know,
Is the time before I met you
Now seems so long ago.
I now want to be with you
As often as I can,
To share my thoughts and feelings
Experiences, plans.
It’s easy being with you,
It’s time that I adore
You’ve added something special
Made life better than before.

Without You
I miss your kiss, your scent, your touch
And wonder how I feel this much
For you in such a short timeframe
My life will never be the same
Without you
I long to hold you through the night
Being with you feels so right
I miss you more than I can say
Don’t want to be another day
Without you

Yearning to be with someone can be painful. This is my homage to those feelings.
Whatever that means
How do you define it, in feelings, thoughts or deeds?
Will you recognise it when the early seeds
Are planted, and your world begins to change
This powerful disorder that can leave you feeling strange
Incongruent emotions, your mind a tangled mess
And patterns of behaviour range from reserved to excess
A rush of pure adrenaline, a stab of searing pain
It will take you to the heavens, crash you back to earth again
And yet you seem conditioned to seek the force unseen
To hear the words “I love you,” whatever it is that means.

Love – unfathomable, indefinable, incongruent?
This poem is a tongue in cheek commentary about love, after hearing the words “I love you…whatever that means.”
The Sea
An incredible force of nature
Its many personas a wonder to behold
A playful clown, toying with those who come to splash and swim in its shallow water
A peaceful prophet, forecasting calm, clear passage for many a traveller
An unfathomable, mysterious spirit, keeping secrets in its hidden depths
A creative artist, producing a magnificent canvas of colour, texture and beauty
A nurturing provider, offering welcome sanctuary for creatures great and small and livelihoods to many
A raging maniac, with the potential to suck the life from those who dare to challenge its supreme authority
A hypnotic companion that holds your gaze and dares you to leave, knowing you’ll be compelled to return
To witness its dichotomous power to nurture and destroy

In Polkerris, Cornwall, sat in a pub gazing at the sea.
Through the eyes of a child
How did we end up so cynical?
When did we get so blasé?
Where did the wonder in everything go?
Who chased the excitement away?
The years pass by us so quickly
And with them our sense of surprise
A shame we lose the perspective of
The world through a little ones eyes
They have no pretence or conditioning
They’re Innocent, trusting and free
There’s no failure only feedback
Just the way it really should be
If we stop taking our lives for granted
And fearing what we can’t control
We could reconnect with our inner child
And rejuvenate body and soul

Authors notes
Thanks to baby Jacob Carey Mills, my inspiration for this one.
Let’s
Let’s not look at our past with anger and regret
Because you and I shared something incredibly special
Let’s acknowledge our mistakes and accept our challenges
We can learn from them and become stronger together as a consequence
Let’s appreciate we are different people from when we met
Stronger for our time together and wiser for our time apart
Let’s use this deep understanding of each other
To sort out our differences and connect more fully than ever
Let’s stop playing games with each other’s feelings
Our relationship was originally based on truth
Let’s just take this relationship and make it work
Through communication, honesty, trust and love

Author’s notes
Should you get back together with an old love? It works for some and not for others and relies on learning from the past, planning together for the future and living the present.
